SANT' ANNA
Tradition and religion come together to pay homage to the protector of women in labor, Sant’Anna.
The Committee for the Celebration of Sant’Anna, with the sponsorship of the Municipality of Lettere and the Pro Loco of the city, has organized the solemn celebrations in honor of the Patron Saint.
It was in 1503 when the construction of the Sanctuary of Sant’Anna in Lettere began, that the statue of Sant’Anna, first kept in the former cathedral of the Castle, became an object of worship.
It is a traditional and superstitious moment at the same time: since the Middle Ages, the water present in the baptismal font is used to bless pregnant women, while the dust of Sant’Anna, at the time of moving the statue from the niche to ‘high altar, is collected with a white handkerchief by the faithful to keep away any ills.
A ceremony attended by, on average, about a thousand faithful, also coming from the neighboring villages of the Lattari Mountains, for a religious event that has been handed down for centuries, touching and particularly felt by the locals.
