MONASTERO DEL SANTO ROSARIO
The venerable Dominican Giovanni Fusco of the convent of S. Maria della Sanità in Naples, a native of Lettere, a shining figure of our Order, dedicated himself, in imitation of Saint Dominic, particularly to the religious.
Together with the priest Andrea Fusco and the nobleman Paolo Fattorosi, also natives of Lettere, they planned the foundation of a monastery. Monsignor Andrea Caputo, Bishop of Lettere at that time, was enthusiastic, indeed he wanted the new Dominican cloister to be built near the cathedral because the new cloistered daughters, the “heart” of his flock, were the lifeblood of his pastoral activity. The Fusco and Fattorosi families donated their land and money near the cathedral and with appropriate renovations and expansions it was transformed into a monastery. The bill of erection of Pope Urban VIII dates from 20 September 1629, but the execution took place on 24 April 1630. Sister Costanza Lopez, as prioress, and Sister Barbara Maresca, as novice mistress, were the two nuns from the monastery “S. Maria delle Grazie “of Sorrento to form the first aspirants to the spirit of the Order.
